Paper Engineering for Pop-up Books
Class Length: 5 hours
Number of Participants: Approx. 12
In this unique hands-on workshop, you will learn the secrets behind the magical pop-ups we all love. Students will learn about the characteristics of paper and how to choose the right kind; learn how to score, cut, fold and glue paper like a pro; and construct an assortment of wheels, v-folds, pull tabs, lift flaps, and other 3-D structures. Each sample you build in class becomes a page you will then bind into an awesome pop-up instruction guide book to take home!
This class will help you understanding the principles of paper engineering, and provide you with step-by-step instructions and reproducible patterns, ideas, and resources for designing and creating pop-up cards and books on your own.
This is an ideal class for book artists looking for a creative boost, teachers interested in integrating hands-on activities across the curriculum, graphic designers, or anyone interested in spending an afternoon exploring something new and different!
No previous experience necessary, all skill levels welcome!
Pop-up Shadowbox Books
Class Length: 5 hours
Number of Participants: Approx. 12
Using a versatile pop-up shadowbox format, participants will create unique 3-D shadowbox books consisting of three separate levels, or layers, of overlapping images that integrate elements of depth, hiding/revealing and sequence, much like a 3-D collage.
Beginning with an overview of pop-up book design and production, paper engineering techniques and illustration methods, I will guide students through the process of scoring, cutting, illustrating, and assembling a shadowbox book.
Students will receive reproducible shadowbox pattern templates to experiment with at home on subsequent projects.
No previous experience is necessary. All skill levels welcome.
Introduction to Book Binding:
Non-Adhesive Binding 1
Class Length: 3 hours
Number of Participants: Approx. 12
In this class, I introduce students to the tools and materials used in bookbinding. Students learn basic sewing techniques used to bind single and multiple sectioned books. Participants complete several different styles of quick and easy pamphlets and non-adhesive bindings perfect for journals, note books, drawing books, etc.
This class is great for teachers as these bindings lend themselves to classroom activities with kids of all skill levels.
Non-Adhesive Binding 2
Class Length: 3-6 hours
Number of Participants: Approx. 10
This faster-paced class is designed for (but not limited to) people who have some previous knowledge of boolkbinding.
Roll up your sleeves and get ready to create an assortment of single and multiple sectioned books using more complex non-adhesive binding techniques.
Several adaptations of historic bindings, a distinctive field journal including a fold out center panel for maps and notes, Dos-a-dos bindings, and more... We’ll produce a wide array of pleasing books with infinite applications, sure to inspire!
Japanese Book Binding
Class length: 3 hours
Number of Participants: Approx. 12
What makes Japanese bindings so extraordinary are beautiful handmade paper covers and decorative exposed stitching along the spine. What makes Japanese binding so versatile is that it offers infinite possibilities for binding single leaves of paper (as opposed to European bindings where the sheets of paper are folded and attached through the spine crease).
After discussing characteristics of Japanese binding, I use cardboard “sewing cards” to teach students 4 traditional decorative stitching patterns. Then, using lovely Japanese papers, students complete a book of their own, bound in the traditional Japanese style.
If time permits, I also like to have students make an accordion book.
This class requires basic sewing experience: threading a needle, keeping it threaded without knotting it, and following some fairly detailed step-by-step sewing instructions.
Box Making
Class length: 3-6 hours
Number of Participants: Approx. 12
Using cardboard and decorative papers, students will complete an assortment of boxes including origami boxes, uniquely shaped treasure boxes, a hexagonal “Circus Tent” box, and a sturdy paper covered cardboard box with a lid.
We will discuss package design, sculptural containers, how to create box patterns, appropriate materials for box construction, and decorative techniques.
This class is for box lovers who love to think outside of the box!
Participants must be able to read a ruler and take measurements.
Binding a Single Section Case-Bound (Hard cover) Book
Class Length: 4 hours
Number of Participants: Approx. 10
This is one of my favorite classes to teach because whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned book artist, this book always comes out looking like a pro created it - perfect every time!
Students will learn the elements of a traditional European binding as they create decorative endpapers, fold and sew pages together, use bookbinder’s cloth to build a cover, and set the “text block” into the “case”. The result is a beautiful, sturdy hardcover book which prompts the same exclamation over and over from happy students: WOW! It’s a real book!
Simple step-by-step instructions and a materials list are provided for students to take home for future book projects.
